5 Ways To Show Your Patriotism… Frugally 2

Often, Americans are pressured to celebrate their independence by spending lots of money.  Many people spend hundreds of dollars on expensive fireworks, hats, clothes, and other “patriotic” paraphernalia.  Today, I will explain five ways to show your patriotism without spending too much money.

Flag on house

1.  Fly The Flag – $20

For very little money you can buy an American flag that will last a lifetime.  Fly your flag by you door, over your window, or on your fence.  If you are renting, make sure to ask your landlord before you put it up.  If you cannot fly it outside, you can at least hang it from your window or on your wall.

Decorate Your Car

2.  Decorate Your Car – $10

Head down to your local store and ask if they have any heavy-duty bumper stickers that you can reuse.  Then use duct tape to add a mini flag to your car antennae.  If you want to do it up even more, you could use special car paints to write patriotic messages on the side of your car.  Just make sure that you meet all legal regulations for your area.

Build A Float

3.  Help Decorate A Float – $20 – $100

See if you can get together with some friends and create your own float.  Although it is probably too late to join a parade this year, some parades might still be excepting float entries.  If the deadline is already past, start planning for next year.
Decorate Yourself

4.  Decorate Yourself – $20

Find a flag shirt that you can wear on Independence Day.  If you want to be even more decked out, you could get a large “Uncle Sam” hat – just make sure it’s the right size.  I had one once that kept slipping over my eyes and falling off.

Fireworks!

5.  Attend A Fireworks Show – $5 – $10

Many neighborhoods give inexpensive fireworks shows that help benefit some local charity.  Ask around and you can probably find one.  Just be careful to get their early – space often runs out quickly!

Once you buy the supplies for these various projects, you can reuse them year after year for even more frugal patriotism!

Especially during the month of July, be careful to only buy products made in the US!

Excellent point, Sudeep! People do need to learn to practice proper flag etiquette.
Here is an article I found about “Flag Rules and Regulations”: http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html
    Thanks,
    Nate
